O’Neill announces Ireland as hosts of Inaugural European Powerchair Football Nations Cup
Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill was on hand today to announce that the University of Limerick will host the Inaugural European Powerchair Football Nations Cup from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th July this year.
The event will host 7 international squads from across Europe competing to become the very first European Powerchair Football Champions, with the top 5 countries qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil 2015.
Power-Chair Football is the fastest growing disability sport in the world, with 20 countries participating across 5 continents. This year, Ireland has the honour of hosting the very first European Nations cup since the establishment of the European Power-chair Football Association (EPFA) in 2010.
University of Limerick Arena will host 7 European Power-chair squads from France, England, Belgium, Denmark, Portugal, Switzerland and the host nation Ireland in July 2014. As Limerick is the city of culture for 2014 and the Nations Cup being the largest international sporting event for the city, it promises to be a spectacular event showcasing the talents of 56 of Europe's best Power-chair players. Every minute of every game will be streamed live around the world.
Association of Irish Power Chair Football (AIPF) has been in existence since 2009 and today boasts a national league with 2 divisions and 10 clubs across the island of Ireland including two teams from Northern Ireland and approximately 100 players involved both male and female. The opening ceremony will take place on Thursday 17th July and promises to be a spectacular affair and will be preceded by Ireland's opening match. The 4 days promise to be electrifying and will open the public's eyes to the skill level of these players and abilities to manoeuvre a powerchair with a top speed of 10km an hour.
