Ireland narrowly miss out in partially sighted tournament
Ireland narrowly lost out to England who were crowned Four Nations Partially Sighted tournament champions recently with a gutsy display against a heroic Republic of Ireland team that had already.
Ireland got off to a good start when they took the lead after only 30 seconds of the game with a goal from the impressive Gerard Prendergast.
The England goalkeeper Brendan Dix was kept busy throughout the game and made several quality saves to keep England within touching distance of the boys in green.
As the first half progressed, England had chances through Kevin Price and Chris Holland but Ireland keeper Robert Vaughan put in an impressive performance in what was a tight and edgy affair.
Entering the last quarter of the game it looked as though Republic of Ireland would once again hold off the England team and emerge as the tournament champions but with five minutes of the game remaining, England's Kevin Price poked a shot home to level the match but the drama was far from over.
Then. with the game looking like it would go into extra time, England managed to find a gap in the Irish defence and Danny Gauden struck what was to be the winning goal.
In the day's other game Spain beat British Blind Sports, National Visually Impaired League team on penalty kicks after the match finished in a thrilling eight goal draw.
Republic of Ireland manager, Robert Moore said, " My players gave it their all and did not disappoint me from day 1 of the competition. It is a shame we could not convert our chances in the final and unfortunately with England scoring two late goals it was just not our day. Within the space of 4 years we have come from a ranking of 14th to 4th and for that I am very proud of my players and assistant coach. It is just a matter of time with this young team to win some silverware."
