The Republic of Ireland were knocked out of the Homeless World Cup Finals 6-3 by a very strong Ukraine team in the quarter finals on Saturday in Milan.

In what was a very tight game, Ireland found their free flowing game stifled by a very competitive and organized Ukraine side. As Ireland struggled to impose themselves the Ukrainians quickly raced into a 2-goal lead. Ireland upped the tempo and got back into the game with a goal by Mark O Neill but as the Irish pressed forward they were hit on the break on the stroke of half time.

The second half began with Ireland continually pressing forward but the resilient Ukrainians repulsed their efforts and again caught them on the break 4-1 for the Ukrainians. Ireland responded to the challenge and two quick goals by Mike Myers and Derek Daily saw them right back in it at 4-3. It was now all Ireland but just as it seemed they were getting back into the game a good move by the Ukrainians saw them go 5-3 ahead. It was all or nothing now and with time running out and Ireland trying to force the issue Ukraine sealed the win with a goal on the break.

It was heartbreaking for the lads as they sank to their knees at the final whistle with the realisation that their World Cup dream was over. There were poignant scenes at the end as the management did their best to console the heartbroken players.

Ireland went out later that day to demolish Poland 9-1and Ghana 8-2 to secure 5th place out of 48 countries.
