FFA U-18 internationals secure runners-up spot
The Republic of Ireland Football For All Schools international squad demonstrated the ability for total football in their final match against Scotland today in the Billy Neill Centre of excellence in Belfast. The Irish bossed the game from the start with some very good free flowing football.
Ireland's dominance was very much evident in midfield where Alan Lawrence team captain began working his magic and linking very well with the two wide players. Lawrence had Irelands first real chance when a well worked corner straight from the training ground finished with a volley by Lawrence on the 18 yard line that grazed the crossbar.
Ireland's pressure paid off when Scotland's centre back was forced into handling the ball in the penalty box which Lawrence duly dispatched. The Irish did not stay in front for long with Scotland scoring just before half time with a fierce shot from outside the 18 yard box.
The team talk by head coach Dave Bell seemed to give the players the lift they needed with 2 quick goals early in the 2nd half, a second penalty when Francis Minogue was taken down in the box and a wonderfully team goal involving 5 players and finished off coolly by centre forward Karl McGrath.
Ireland were no cruising and took the foot off the pedal which Scotland took advantage of and pulled a goal back immediately with a very well worked goal crossed from the right and Scotland's centre midfielder controlled on his chest and on the turn hit home into the top corner.
The Irish responded with two quick goals from Glady Mampuya and centre back Aaron Parish taking Ireland out of sight and securing a great win. Notable performances were Glady Mampuya, Robbie Falvey, Ritchie Stilwell and a Paul Mcgrath like performance by centre back Shaun Carroll. Irish player of the tournament with a total of four goals and numerous assists was Captain Alan Lawrence.
Head Coach Dave Bell was delighted with the performance and the teams overall attitude throughout the tournament. "The way each and every player has developed in the past month has been phenomenal. These players were complimented by other international coaches on their ability to play football and express themselves without fear of failure all of which is down to the very hard work in training by my two coaches JJ Glynn and Ryan Casey. This is a young team and I have great expectations for them in the coming two years.".
England's 10-1 win against Northern Ireland secured them the championship. Ireland took runners up with 6 points.
