This year’s staging of the tournament will be in Donegal with five different venues set to be used over three days as Connacht, Leinster and Munster travel up to compete with Ulster.
Ulster Head Coach Gary Duffy does admit that the luxury of not travelling far is a comfort to cling to, but he won’t allow that to affect his players’ state of mind going into the games.
“I’ve played in this tournament so what I would say straight away is that we don’t have to travel, which means we’re not on a bus for eight hours down to Munster or four hours down to Leinster on the day of the game. So we have that wee bit of a headstart for our first game but we can’t take anything for granted,” said Duffy.
“We will have our bearings of the grounds that we will be going to, so that’s a small advantage. At the same time, it’s a selected team against other provinces so you don’t necessarily know what you are coming up against as each team will be made up of players from different clubs. So, in a way, we’re all going in on the same level.
“We won’t really know how Connacht, Leinster and Munster will set up, what their strengths are…we will know their individual players but, as a group, we are going in blind. So you have to focus on yourself and what you can do to affect your own performance.”
Ulster have played a couple of games against local opposition but their hard work has largely come on the training ground with the final bits of preparation coming with perfecting their set-pieces.
Duffy, who is also in charge of Buncrana Hearts, knows that this tournament brings about different kinds of challenges but they are ones that he is happy to embrace.
“For me as a coach, it’s great. You’re going into the unknown and it’s a massive test as a coach. You are going into games where you are going to have to adapt in the moment. That’s where the good coaching practice comes in. Also the more senior players you have the better because they will be able to adapt quicker than some players who might not have played as many games,” said Duffy.
“We have three games, so we’re going to have to maximise our squad. Sometimes you can be caught blind where you want to play your best players all of the time, but for this tournament that won’t be the case because you have to be careful on when you use them and how you use them.
“The lads are well aware of what is at stake if they win the competition and a chance of getting to the Regions’ Cup to represent your country. But our focus is very much on getting ready for our first game against Munster and we’ll take it from there.”
