REPORT | WU19 | Ireland 0-1 Cymru

A single goal saw the Ireland Women's Under-19s lose 1-0 to Cymru in their second UEFA WU19 European Championship Elite Round Qualifiers.

The contest in Llanelli was settled by a 28th-minute finish from Mared Griffiths as Ireland lost their first game in Group A6 despite dominating most of the play.

After beating Serbia in their opening game of this round of qualifiers, Dave Connell's squad knew that they needed to build on that in order to fight for top spot in the group and a place at the EURO Finals.

Shamrock Rovers forward Joy Ralph registered Ireland's intent to break the deadlock early on but did not have luck on her side. Cymru, however, did when Griffiths fired in their goal.

At that point Ireland were chasing the game and kept the pressure on with captain Lia O'Leary proving to be an attacking threat on the left flank as she went close with a couple of efforts.

Defenders Aoife Kelly, Mary Phillips and Kiera Sena all tried to find that equaliser but the ball just wouldn't drop into the back of the opponents' net.

Next up is a clash with France on Tuesday in Port Talbot. Ireland will be hoping to close out this group on a high.

Ireland: Katie Keane; Aoife Turner (Isabel Ryan 54), Mary Phillips, Aoife Kelly, Kiera Sena; Aoibhe Brennan, Lucy Fitzgerald (Niamh Cotter 54); Katie Lawlee (Ceola Bergin 54), Hannah Healy, LIa O'Leary (Katie O'Reilly 83); Joy Ralph (Rebecca Devereux 83).
