REPORT | MU19 | Dillon penalty earns draw against Slovenia

Ireland Men’s Under-19 drew their second game of the Elite Phase 1-1 with Slovenia in Wolfsburg, Germany.

A penalty into first-half injury from Cian Dillon earned the draw but with Germany's win over Finland the result meant Ireland won't play a part at this summer's European Championships.

Ireland were behind in the eighth minute when Mark Šerbec put the Slovenians ahead.

Ireland responded with Trent Kone Doherty forcing a save from Tai Žnuderl. The Slovenians remained a threat and Oisin Cooney was called into from an effort from Kristjan Brenda.

But as half-time approached Ireland were awarded a penalty. Queen’s Park Rangers’ Dillon stepped up to fire in an equaliser to give Ireland hope of claiming maximum points.

In the second half both teams pushed for the winner with Cooney again keeping the Slovenians out with a save. At the other end Sean Keogh forced Žnuderl into another stop as Ireland upped the pressure.

The best chance for Tom Mohan’s side would come in the 83rd minute when substitute Michael Noonan struck the woodwork following a Matthew Moore corner.

Ike Orazi had a late chance which again forced Žnuderl into a save but Ireland couldn’t find a way through and both teams had to make do with a point.

Ireland: Cooney, Turley (C), Ashbee, O’Sullivan, Keogh, Morley (Okosun, 88’), Moore, Akachukwu, Kone-Doherty (Razi, 56’), Dillon (Noonan, 71’), Orazi
