REPORT | BU16 | Fay hits hat-trick in 5-1 Finland win

Ireland Boys Under-16s made it back-to-back wins when they overcame hosts Finland 5-1 in their second game of their development tournament.

Shamrock Rovers’ Corey Fay hit a 13-minute hat-trick after coming off the bench with his club mate Archie Quinn and St. Patrick’s Athletic Blake Devereux-Lynch adding to the tally.

Having beaten Latvia 4-0 on Saturday, the young Irish team were full of confidence going into the game at Eerikkilä Sport facility in Tammela.

The home side were able to keep Ireland at bay in the first half but in the second half the young Boys in Green overcame their opponents.

Two minutes in the second half, Ireland took the lead when Quinn took advantage of a mistake in the Finnish backline and he chipped the goalkeeper for the game’s opener.

Devereux Lynch doubled Ireland’s lead in the 53rd minute when he met a smart lay off by Quinn to bend an effort beyond the keeper for 2-0.

Fay would make in 3-0 in the 82nd minute as he capitalised on a miscommunication between the Finland goalkeeper and defender to tap into an empty net.

A minute later Finland had one back. The ball appeared to be running out of play but Finland kept it alive and Ahmed Babiker fired in to pull one back for 3-1.

Fay would score his second of the game in spectacular style netting from 50 yards after spotting Roni Koskinen off his line to make it 4-1.

He completed his hat-trick in additional time firing low at the near post from a tight angle to complete the rout.

Ireland finish their friendly series on Thursday when they take on Iceland.
