REPORT | BU15 | Austria 2-0 Ireland

Ireland Boys Under-15s went down 2-0 in the Tourneo Delle Nazioni to joint hosts Austria.

In a game where Ireland dominated large parts of possession it would be two goals either side of the break that gave the Austrians the victory.

Ireland had their chances and having scored a last-minute equaliser against Czechia, only 24 hours before, they were looking to build on the draw.

And Jason Donohue’s team took confidence from that game into the meeting with today’s opponents and were unlucky not to be ahead in the first half.

With 23 minutes gone, Archie Quinn forced a good save from Teo Hupfauf when Quinn engineered space for himself and fired low but the goalkeeper was able to get a block to the strike to see it go behind for a corner.

Two minutes later Quinn was thwarted again by Hupfaut. The Shamrock Rovers attacker took advantage of a mix-up in the Austrian midfield, drove at goal from his own half but couldn’t beat the large frame of the keeper who denied him again in a one-on-one.

Ireland would fall behind in the 27th minute. Matthias Hartl was allowed space to get a shot away and despite the save from Alex Byrne the ball fell to Nenad Petric to hook a volley into the back of the net.

Seven minutes into the second half, Austria doubled their lead when Matteo Maric got on the end of a neat cut back to fire past Byrne.

Byrne was kept busy in the second period but Ireland limited chances for Austria. They were denied a way back into the game when Quinn was seemingly fouled in the penalty area but despite replays showing an infringement no decision was given.

Ireland play again on Tuesday.
