PREVIEW | U17 World Cup | Ireland vs Canada

The Republic of Ireland Men’s Under-17s enter the knockout stages of the FIFA U17 World Cup as they take on Canada in Doha on Friday.

Ireland booked their place into the Round of 32 after topping Group J with seven points ahead of Uzbekistan, Paraguay and Panama.

Colin O'Brien's team come up against a Canada side who have been to nine previous U17 World Cups and finished second in a group containing France, Uganda and Chile.

If the teams are level after 90 minutes, the match will go straight to a penalty shootout to decide who advances to the Round of 16.

Ireland are without Max Kovalevskis who has been ruled out through concussion and adhering to FIFA return to play protocol.

Quotes

Ireland Men’s Under-17s Head Coach Colin O’Brien

“It was great that we topped the group. We had a tough game against feisty opposition (Paraguay) but to proceed to the knockout stages and play Canada, it’s another great achievement.

“The amount of people reaching out to the staff, the players and myself individually with messages of support, it’s really appreciated, it’s inspiring, stay with us, keep them coming. For everyone who has come out here, the families, the Irish community in Doha and Qatar, your support has been really appreciated. We’ll need that again Friday night so stay with us because it could go all the way on Friday evening.”
