Goals from Emily Murphy, Katie McCabe and Marissa Sheva proved decisive in a contest that ebbed and flowed throughout. Ireland raced into a two-goal lead before Tanja Pawollek pulled one back for the hosts. Sheva restored Ireland’s advantage in the second half, but Ewa Pajor’s late strike ensured a tense finale, particularly after McCabe missed a penalty. However, the visitors showed composure to see out the win.
The result strengthens Ireland’s bid to finish third in the group, potentially securing a more favourable play-off route. Just as encouraging was the manner of the performance, with Carla Ward’s side combining composure and resilience on a difficult playing surface.
Ward was forced into a late change, with Abbie Larkin replacing the ill Kyra Carusa in attack. Denise O’Sullivan returned to midfield following injury and played a key role in Ireland’s control of the game.
Despite the poor condition of the pitch, Ireland settled quickly and took the lead in the 12th minute. O’Sullivan’s pass found Sheva, who teed up Murphy to finish confidently past Kinga Szemik. Ireland doubled their advantage soon after when McCabe struck a superb volley from the edge of the area.
Poland responded with attacking intent and were rewarded before half-time, Pawollek heading home from a well-delivered cross to reduce the deficit.
Ireland regained control after the break and extended their lead on 59 minutes. O’Sullivan won possession before Murphy and Sheva combined, the latter firing an excellent finish into the top corner.
Pajor underlined her quality with a well-taken goal to make it 3-2 late on, capitalising on a momentary lapse in concentration. Ireland had an opportunity to seal the result from the penalty spot shortly after, but McCabe’s effort went over the bar.
Poland pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Ireland’s defence held firm to secure a deserved victory.
The sides will meet again on Saturday at Aviva Stadium.
