MATCH PREVIEW | 2026 FAI Oscar Traynor Trophy Final

MATCH PREVIEW | 2026 FAI Oscar Traynor Trophy Final

Galway meets Limerick in the final of the FAI Oscar Traynor Trophy at Eamon Deacy Park this Sunday.

Last year’s beaten finalists Limerick District League will look to overcome the heartache of 12 months ago and reclaim a trophy they last won in 2019 when they take on  Galway District League.

But Galway will feel buoyed after putting the holders Wexford Football League to the sword in the semi-final after an emphatic 4-1 victory. Galway’s only win in the final of this competition came in the 1970/71 season, and they are looking repeat that success 55 years later.

Limerick sealed their return to the final with a 2-1 win over Donegal Junior League after extra time. That Donegal goal the only goal Limerick conceded on their way to the final.

Manager Interviews

Limerick District League Manager Nigel Casey said: “It’s a prestigious cup and deserves to be held in a high regard.

“Two weeks before the competition started we had no management team, we came together, we took it on board and here we are in a final.

"They’re a great bunch of lads, there’s great commitment from them. They’ve given us everything, we’ve won every game we’ve played. They’ve really come together as a group.

“Galway will have a lot of experience in their squad. We won’t fear them, we will be a Limerick team that will go up there and play football. Should we go and win it it’s a huge credit to Limerick football and how strong the game is in the county.”

Galway District League Team Manager Brendan O’Connor said: “It’s the first time we’ve been in a final for 20 odd years and the players and staff have been shown some amazing love from the community in Galway.

“It’s one of the biggest games in junior football and the fact it will be in a stadium, at Eamon Deacy Park, just adds the game.

“Limerick have won this competition a few times and they were beaten finalists last year so they’ll be looking to re-write it from last year. They’ve had a big changeover of players but remain a strong team. It will be two very good sides going for it.”
