The creation of a new men's third tier is a key pillar of the 11 actions of the Football Pathways Plan and today, the association has engaged with clubs on the process to highlight the next phase of assessment towards creating the new FAI National League.
Clubs have been contacted with a detailed 'FAI National League - Areas of Assessment' document, which will guide prospective clubs through the application and evaluation process for entry into this exciting new division.
This development marks a crucial phase in the FAI’s strategic commitment to enhancing Irish football, as outlined in its Football Pathways Plan. The new men's Third Tier is envisioned as a competitive platform that champions best practice in club management, fosters clearer player progression pathways and cultivates greater stability and ambition among clubs nationwide.
The Areas of Assessment document provides a transparent framework, detailing criteria against which clubs will be evaluated. This process ensures that clubs aspiring to join the new league are well-prepared to meet the standards required for a positive contribution to the national game. Key areas of focus will include Governance, Facilities, Community Participation, Finance, Competition History, Player Development and overall Strategic Vision.
Fran Gavin, FAI Head of Competitions & Football Services, said: "Today marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing development of Irish domestic football, as we lay more of the groundwork for the establishment of a vibrant and sustainable FAI National League. This is a significant advancement in our plans, moving us closer to delivering a key pillar of the FAI's Football Pathways Plan.
"We envision a league that not only provides a competitive platform but also champions best practice in club management and community engagement. This next stage, involving a thorough assessment process, is crucial to ensuring we build this new tier on solid foundations. We are seeking partners who share our vision for a stronger, more competitive and more sustainable domestic game.
"The assessment process is designed to be thorough and fair. It's an opportunity for clubs to demonstrate their readiness and commitment to contributing positively to the future of the FAI National League. We look forward to embarking on this new chapter alongside clubs that are ready to meet the challenge and help grow Irish football.
"We encourage all clubs within the process to engage thoroughly with the 'Areas of Assessment', and that the FAI Competitions Department will support clubs through this process as the creation of the new FAI National League continues to gather momentum.
"We've seen a very encouraging level of positivity since opening expressions of interest for the new FAI National League. The challenge is to translate this initial enthusiasm into tangible progress, as they navigate the application process, culminating in the league's successful establishment."
