Following today's FIFA 2027 Women's World Cup play-off draw, the Girls in Green were paired with Kazakhstan in a two-legged Round 1 tie this October, with a potential final against either Belgium or Poland waiting in the wings.
While Ireland will enter the first round as strong favourites, Ward was quick to shut down any premature talk of a play-off final during her press conference this afternoon.
Addressing the draw, Ward immediately pointed to the massive travel demands of facing the Central Asian side in the opening leg before returning to Ireland for the return fixture.
"First of all, we've got to get past Kazakhstan," Ward insisted.
"It's not easy. It's a logistical nightmare, some would say. So, no, it's not going to be easy.
"But I think both Kazakhstan, Poland, and Belgium are all going to be difficult. So, look, we'll do everything we can to get over that first hurdle and then obviously try and navigate that final round if and when we get there."
Ireland’s sensational recent form has seen them rapidly rise up the European ranks, a transformation that means they will bear the unfamiliar tag of favourites heading into the play-offs, especially considering the recent form over Belgium and Poland, the two potential final opponents.
While Ward acknowledges that being favourites is a "privilege" her players have worked hard to achieve, she plans to keep using the squad's classic siege mentality to keep them sharp.
"I think that’s a privilege that comes with the performances that we’ve put in. We’ve earned the right to flip that [underdog tag]," Ward said.
"But to be honest, I'll be using that underdog fuel because we used it a lot. So why wouldn't other nations that are coming up against us use it? We have to flip that and remind everybody that complacency matters — there's no room for it."
Ward added that while she doesn't need to remind her "massively focused" group of the stakes, managing the transition in expectations is a key part of the journey.
"The element of us being the underdog, we can flip that and say, 'Well, what does it look like now?' So yeah, this first round, I would say that, yeah, we're not the underdog. Second round against Belgium or Poland, not so sure, as they are two tough sides."
What's Next?
Irish fans eagerly awaiting travel and ticket details won't have to wait long. The official deadline for UEFA and the respective associations to confirm the fixture schedule, dates, and venues for the first-round matches is June 26th.
