Maynooth and UCC clinch CUFL titles

The action continued on day two of the three-day Colleges and Universities League Festival of Finals at Athlone Town Stadium with the Division Three and Four winners decided.

Maynooth University ‘C’ were crowned Division Three champions with a 3-1 victory over Dundalk IT ‘B’. While in the Division Four decider the holders UCC ‘D’ went on a goal spree to hit eight without reply against Griffith College Dublin and retain their title.

Division Three Final

Maynooth University ‘C’ 3 Dundalk IT ‘B’ 1
Maynooth University ‘C’ Goals: Christopher Nwankwo x 2, Gerald Okoeguale
Dundalk IT ‘B’ Goal: Victor Ihemeje

Maynooth have striker Christopher Nwanko to thank for his brace of goals, one in each half, which sustained them when they were forced to play most of the second half with 10 men.

Gerald Okoeguale was given his marching orders by referee Paul Tone for a challenge on the Dundalk ‘keeper Cillian Rice which earned him a second yellow card, having already been booked in the opening half.

Okoeguale had been proving a threat to the Dundalk defence throughout the first-half and had given Maynooth an early lead. The goal came in the 15th minute and it was set up by Destiny Asemota with a brilliant cross from the right flank that Okoeguale met first time to fire past a helpless Rice.

Just over ten minutes later Maynooth doubled their advantage with the first of Nwankwo’s goals. The striker picked up a loose clearance inside the Dundalk area and did well under pressure to slot home.

Maynooth then missed a great chance to make it 3-0 as half-time drew nearer when Okoeguale blazed his penalty kick high over the crossbar after Nwankwo was impeded by Dundalk goalkeeper Rice.

Dundalk went close to getting a goal back from Shane O'Brien with two well delivered free kicks but Maynooth ‘keeper Andrew Skerritt comfortably held them. The dismissal of Okoeguale in the opening minutes of the second half put Maynooth in a vulnerable position and for a while Dundalk looked like getting a goal back.

Thomas Daly went close for the Louth men and it was Nwankwo who settled Maynooth when he grabbed a third goal and his second of the game. Gerard O’Connor’s cross from the right was blocked by Rice and when the ball fell for Sam Barnes, he set up Nwankwo to apply the finish.

Victor Ihemeje finally managed to net a goal for Dundalk with 10 minutes remaining and in the final minutes Thomas Daly tested Maynooth goalkeeper Andrew Skerritt but it was too little too late and the Kildare men took the honours.
