FAI & Aviva launch next phase of In Her Boots

After a hugely successful inaugural year, In Her Boots supported by Aviva, is back for Year Two, with an expanded programme designed to empower even more girls to stay in sport.

Launched in 2024 to address the drop-off in girls’ participation in football, In Her Boots, a free education and awareness-based programme aimed at empowering the football volunteer workforce, who train girls aged 9-16. Over 2,000 coaches, parents, and volunteers across clubs nationwide have taken part since the launch last September.

The programme’s focus on female-specific coaching, nutrition, injury reduction, and inclusive environments has resonated deeply with communities, driving exceptional demand and engagement.

The In Her Boots programme is designed to educate and empower the football volunteer workforce, particularly those working with girls aged 9-16, by providing expert-led guidance on key areas such as injury reduction, nutrition, and female health. Developed in collaboration with leading professionals, the programme delivers practical, evidence-based insights to support young female athletes.

FAI Development Officers lead workshops nationwide, equipping coaches and parents with the knowledge to help girls stay healthy, confident, and engaged in sport. The programme also addresses the physiological changes girls experience during adolescence, such as training during puberty, and offers strategies to support them through these critical stages.

In addition to technical training, In Her Boots promotes inclusive environments by guiding clubs on appropriate facilities, kit, and equipment ensuring girls feel welcome and supported. With many girls leaving sport due to lack of encouragement, role models, or resources, this initiative aims to reverse that trend by fostering long-term participation.

Backed by Aviva and the FAI’s shared commitment to grassroots development, In Her Boots is changing the game for girls in football. It provides mentorship, education, and community support to help them thrive both on and off the pitch.

Both Aviva and the FAI are dedicated to creating lasting change in women’s football. This initiative is the latest in their ongoing commitment to supporting female athletes and building a strong foundation for girls’ football in Ireland.

Pearl Slattery, Programme Coordinator FAI said: "Year two is about deepening our impact across the country. This programme will help provide a better environment for girls across Ireland by offering workshops, mentorship, and practical support for parents and coaches to keep the girls in sport.  We’re excited to bring even more tailored support to communities, helping girls stay engaged and confident in their football journey."

Caroline Cummins, Sponsorship Manager Aviva commented, “The response to In Her Boots from hundreds of young girls and their parents has been very encouraging and we look forward to this programme growing significantly. We’re proud to support this vital programme, helping to close the gender gap in sport and ensuring girls have the tools, role models, and encouragement they need to thrive in football."
