U19 | 35 called-up for Dublin training camp

Republic of Ireland Under-19s Head Coach Tom Mohan has called in 35 players for a two-day training camp in Dublin this week.

The camp will form part of Mohan’s preparations for the UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifiers in November with Ireland facing hosts Bulgaria as well as Montenegro and Bosnia & Herzegovina in Group 6.

This will be the third such U19 event to take place in the last two weeks following home-based assessment days at Longford Town’s Bishopsgate Stadium and in Limerick.

The international head coach has been evaluating options based at home and abroad and has been working closely with League of Ireland clubs to bring players in from both Group A and B of the EA SPORTS National League of Ireland.

The squad will meet up today before playing a behind-closed-doors friendly in Dublin on Tuesday.

Tom Mohan said: “Following such a long break from football for the Irish-based players it has been imperative that myself and my staff get to see as many players as possible at close quarters. We’ve done this by getting around the country to monitor player performances along with our many FAI scouts and FAI staff who are covering games at all age groups on a regular basis.

“This training camp provides us with the opportunity to bring in overseas-based players, who are currently putting the finishing touches to their pre -season schedules, as well as some of our home-based League of Ireland players.

“The overall objective for all players who have been brought in over the past number of weeks is to be selected in upcoming international squads in September and October prior to the European Qualifiers in Bulgaria in November.

“It has obviously been impossible to have all players attend the recent midweek events with numerous players involved with their respective first team squads and many of our young players selected in squads for European ties. They would have gained invaluable and successful experiences along the way which will only be beneficial for their development in the game.”
