REPORT | Waterford & District Junior League lift 2024 Oscar Traynor Cup

The Waterford & District Junior League won the Oscar Traynor Cup after a thrilling 4-2 win over the Mayo Football League in Castlebar.

Goals from Darryl Walsh and Mark O'Keeffe for Waterford in the first half cancelled out Dylan McKee’s goal for Mayo to give them the lead at the break before goals from Regix Madika and a late strike from Conor Whittle ensured the win for the Waterford side in the second half.

The first opportunity came for Waterford when a cross from the left from Brennan saw an advancing run at the back post cut out by a defensive clearance by Edeh. Waterford were to score midway through the first half when a short corner to O’Keefe was played into the path of Walsh who sent his high curling effort to the back post which looped over Cunningham and into the top corner.

Mayo grew into the game following that concession and were to deservedly draw level after an initial low effort from Lofus was blocked for a corner and from the resulting set piece McKee made the perfect connection at the near post with a header to send the ball past Dunphy.

Waterford were to take the lead just before half time following some patient build-up play from the back the ball was sent long into the path of O’Keeffe who controlled it well with his first touch and with his second he slid it past the on-rushing Cunningham at the near post to give the away side the lead at half time.

Waterford were to extend their lead in the opening minutes of the second half when a corner from the left was met by Madika who was brave to head it past Cunningham to extend his sides lead.

Mayo were to pull one back midway through the second half when a series of crosses sent into the Waterford area saw some serious persistence from Ben Edeh who saw his initial header towards goal only parried by Dunphy and sensing the ball would come loose he followed through to steer the ball to the net with his second attempt.

Waterford was to seal the tie and the cup in added-on time following a break from Masood from defence down the right saw him opt to not play it into the corner but rather draw three players to him to create space and the ball was quickly played into the path of Whittle who calmly slotted it past Cunningham to bring the cup to the south east.
