REPORT | MU19 | Brave Irish performance sees Netherlands claim win

Ireland Men’s Under-19s missed out on qualification to the Elite Round by a point after a late Netherlands comeback condemned them to a 4-2 defeat.

Tom Mohan’s team had fallen behind to a goal from Nassim El Harmouz on 11 minutes but get back into it in the 37th minute.

Luca Cailloce’s strike at goal from a corner was guided in by Taylor McCarthy for 1-1.

Five minutes into the second half Ireland took the lead. A free-kick into the box was won by Luke Mulligan who flicked goalward, the ball took a second knock on by a Dutch defender which dropped it into the path of Adam Brennan to slide home.

That result would have taken Ireland through and Tom Mohan’s team were tough to break down as they kept the hosts at bay. But the Netherlands fought back, first Shane Kluivert equalised with 10 minutes remaining.

Then Luca Messori turned the game on its head after 83 minutes. In additional time Tobias Van Den Elshout wrapped up the game as Ireland were defeated by a flurry of late goals.
