REPORT | MU17 | Harpur on target as Hungary earn win

Ireland went down 2-1 to Hungary in the second of two friendlies between the countries in Càdiz, Spain.

Ireland’s goal came in the second half from Bohemian’s Josh Harpur but a late goal from Hungary’s Aron Balogh would prove to be the winner in a close contest in southern Spain.

Ireland were looking to make it back-to-back against Hungary as they prepare for next month’s Elite Round of the UEFA European Under-17 Qualifiers in Poland.

They found themselves 1-0 down  after 20 minutes when Hungary were awarded a penalty. Andrej Vasiljevic converting the spotkick to give them a lead at the break.

Hungary held onto their lead until 20 minutes from time when Harpur was played in by Danny Burke and Bohs striker finished past the goalkeeper from a tight angle.

But with the game looking to be heading to a draw the Hungarians snatched the win six minutes from time.

The next game for the MU17s will be on Wednesday, March 25 when they take on Poland in qualification action.
