Preview | A breakdown of how things can play out this weekend in the FAI National League

As we head into the penultimate weekend of the FAI National League group stages, there is still only one official Semi-Finalist, so it all comes down to the performances on the pitch this Saturday to decide who will join Villa in the final four.

With two more spots for group winners and one spot for the best runner-up still achievable for six teams, there is plenty to keep an eye on this weekend.

With so much to digest, here is a breakdown of how each team could qualify:

Home Farm DCU:

The Dublin side are sitting top of Group 1 at the moment but with a Lucan game in hand hanging over their heads, they won’t be feeling too comfortable this Saturday with nothing more they can do but watch.

Should Lucan win, Home Farm DCU would drop down to second but a solid 15 points and a healthy goal difference in their corner, they are still in a strong position to qualify for the Semis.

Lucan United:

Lucan hold all the cards heading into Saturday with fate in their own hands as all they have to do is secure the win and they are on their way to the Semi-Finals as winners of Group 1.

However, if they fail to take the three points, then they will be depending on other results across the three groups to go their way subject to their own score-line.

Mervue United:

The Galway side are currently third in Group 1 but could still be within a chance of qualifying for the Semi-Finals should they beat Cockhill Celtic on Saturday and put a few goals in the back of the net in the process to bump up their goal difference.

A win is a must for the side and if that happens then a few goals along the way could put them as the best of the runners-up or even top of Group 1, depending on other results.

St Francis / Salthill Devon:

This is the biggest match of the season for these two teams with all to play for on Saturday. For whoever wins, it’s as simple as going straight through to the Semi’s, however, for whoever loses, it’s more complicated.

If St Francis lose and therefore finish second in the group, they still have a chance at qualifying depending on what score their match finishes and if Lucan United do not win their final match in Group 1. The same goes for Salthill Devon if they were to lose but as they are behind on goal difference, they would need the score-line in Lucan’s fixture to go their way.

CK United:

While CK United have finished playing all of their matches, there is still a possibility that if results go their way, they can qualify on the 14 points they have racked up so far.

Though the chances are quite low with their disadvantage on goal difference, the possibility is always there so they will be keeping a close eye on the other matches this weekend.

The Semi Finals will be played later this month and the draw for the final four takes place next week.
