Gary Spain named MNT Supporter Liaison Officer

The Football Association of Ireland has appointed Gary Spain as its National Teams’ Supporter Liaison Officer for the Republic of Ireland Men's National Team.

Revitalising the relationship and connection between the FAI and supporters was identified in the 2022-2025 FAI Strategy as a key objective and this new role - which will be replicated for the Women's National Team - is part of that process.

A voluntary role, the Supporter Liaison Officer will be the link between the Association, the teams and the supporters; helping to build and maintain a relationship through providing important information and enhancing the match-day experience.

Gary has followed Ireland's international teams for almost 50 years, including attending every Ireland match at a major tournament since 1988, and now takes up this volunteer position.

Hailing from Limerick and now living in Dublin, Gary is a supporter of his home-town club Treaty United and a familiar figure around League of Ireland stadiums.

Speaking about the new role, Gary said: “I’m thrilled to be starting this new position with the FAI. Having attended my first international game in 1974 and travelled to three World Cups and three European Championship I’m hoping my experience of following Ireland home and away can be benefit to both our amazing fans and the FAI. I look forward to getting started.”

A Supporter Liaison Officer for the Ireland Women's National Team, who will be part of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 team, will be announced in due course.
