Ranked ninth in League A following the European Qualifiers, the Girls in Green will be competing at the very highest tier of European football among the continent’s elite 16 nations.
Here is everything you need to know ahead of Tuesday's draw.
When and where does the draw take place?
The draw for the upcoming UEFA Women’s Nations League campaign will be held on Tuesday next week at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, with live coverage streamed across UEFA digital platforms and real-time updates across Ireland Football social channels.
How does the draw work?
League A features Europe’s top 16 national sides divided into four seeded pots of four teams, determined by their final overall 2026 Women’s European Qualifiers rankings.
The draw will allocate teams into four distinct groups (Group A1, Group A2, Group A3, and Group A4). Each group will consist of one nation from Pot 1, Pot 2, Pot 3, and Pot 4:
Pot 1: Seeded 1st – 4th
Pot 2: Seeded 5th – 8th
Pot 3: Seeded 9th – 12th (Republic of Ireland)
Pot 4: Seeded 13th – 16th
Teams will be drawn pot-by-pot, beginning with Pot 1 and concluding with Pot 4, ensuring balanced, high-stakes groups throughout the top division.
Pot 1
Germany (1)
Spain (2)
Denmark (3)
France (4)
Pot 2
England (5)
Norway (6)
Netherlands (7)
Italy (8)
Pot 3
Republic of Ireland (9)
Sweden (10)
Iceland (11)
Austria (12)
Pot 4
Switzerland (13)
Portugal (14)
Scotland (15)
Wales (16)
Because teams cannot be drawn against opponents in their own pot, Ireland will avoid Sweden, Iceland, and Austria.
Potential Opponents: Who can Ireland face?
Ireland will be drawn against one European heavyweight from each of Pots 1, 2, and 4:
From Pot 1: Spain, Germany, France, or Denmark.
From Pot 2: England, Norway, Netherlands, or Italy.
From Pot 4: Switzerland, Portugal, or Scotland and Wales.
What to watch out for: The Team GB Constraint
Supporters keeping an eye on potential clashes with British nations should note a key draw condition:
The Rule: In order to avoid any potential perceived conflict of interest, Scotland and Wales (both in Pot 4) cannot be drawn into the same group as England (Pot 2), due to their player representation under Team GB for the Olympic Games.
Impact for Ireland: If Ireland are drawn into a group alongside England from Pot 2, neither Scotland nor Wales can join that group from Pot 4 (meaning Ireland's Pot 4 opponent would automatically be either Switzerland or Portugal). As a result, the Republic of Ireland can be drawn against a maximum of one British nation in their group.
Fixture Windows & Match Scheduling
The League A campaign will feature six matchdays played on a home-and-away round-robin format across three designated international windows in 2027:
Matchdays 1 & 2: 23 February – 6 March 2027
Matchdays 3 & 4: 13 – 24 April 2027
Matchdays 5 & 6: 7 – 15 June 2027
The full fixture schedule, including venues, kick-off times, and ticketing details, will be confirmed by UEFA and the FAI later in November.
