Gerry Davis’s Irish side, Region 2, beat Russias South Region 1-0 on Saturday thanks to a first half goal from Eoin Hayes.

Castilla y León are the Spanish representatives and they won 4-1 against Olomouc from Czech Republic yesterday so the meeting in Maltepe near Istanbul (1.00pm) could have a major bearing on who wins the group.

The winners of each group will meet in the finals. If there is no winner in the other game in the group which sees South Region clash with Olomouc, then the winners of encounter between the Irish and Spanish sides could not be denied top spot in the group.

Davis was very pleased with how his side performed against the Russians in extremely hot conditions on Saturday.

“I was absolutely delighted with the performance. It was a really tough game. We were under the cosh for a long time,” he said.

“They had a lot of possession but we didn’t have a lot of shots to save. Our back four were magnificent, the midfield and front two worked very hard. It was a really good performance.

“It was around 34C degrees when we got to the stadium and there was a water break in each half which showed how warm it was. We had to dig deep so I’m really pleased.

“The goal from Eoin Hayes was a real finisher’s goal. We may have had one or two other opportunities which we passed up with different decisions but you can’t be too hard on anybody.

“We’ve looked at the videos of the Spanish and have a game plan for Monday. That’s a massive game for us now.”
