Republic of Ireland Under-17 Head Coach John Morling has selected a squad of 34 players to participate in a two day Training camp at Oriel Park, Dundalk on December 27 and 28.

The workout will kick-start a busy three months for the Irish, with a friendly planned for February ahead of their UEFA Elite phase qualification mini-group in Greece from 23-28 March. The Boys in Green were last month grouped with Denmark, Latvia and hosts Greece and will battle it for the sole available place in the finals alongside tournament hosts Serbia from 3-15 May.

Ireland progressed from their UEFA preliminary phase group hosted by Malta in September courtesy of victories in their opening two matches over the hosts and Croatia. Morling's side had already secured one of the two qualifying berths when they faced fellow qualifiers Norway in the concluding fixture which ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat.

Morling has retained all of those available players in this training squad. In addition, he will use this opportunity to welcome back some injured personnel such as Steven Smith (Arsenal) and Will Hayhurst (Preston North End) as well as assess a raft of newcomers.

"This training camp serves an important purpose in maintaining our preparations for the Elite phase qualifiers in March," he said.

"The lads selected for the first phase performed well in Malta and now it's a case of giving another chance to lads who might have featured earlier in the season or last season during the Under-16 campaign.

"We've gathered reports of their club form and now we want to see how to fare alongside the current crop of players.

"The recent bad weather has meant our lads haven't played much club football lately and we're delighted to have use of Dundalk FC's FIFA 2-star artificial surface for this exercise."

Morling added: "We have eleven domestically-based players in over the two day training camp but are staging another assessment game on the afternoon of December 28 in Dublin for 30 other players currently playing in Ireland."
