Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team manager Sue Ronan has named her squad for the FIFA World Cup qualifier against European champions Germany at Tallaght Stadium on Saturday, April 5 (15:00).

All 18 players selected were part of the Irish squad that finished sixth in the 12 nation Cyprus Cup tournament earlier this month. During the tournament Ireland, who were ranked 12th of the 12 participants, finished second in Group C to South Korea after missing out on the top spot on goal difference following 1-1 draws against New Zealand and South Korea and a 2-1 win over Switzerland. They were then beaten 2-1 by world No.7 Canada in the play-off for fifth and sixth place with the 2012 Olympic bronze medallists scoring the winning goal in the 90th minute

The game against Germany marks the resumption of the World Cup qualifying campaign. Ireland, with seven points from their opening three games, lie second in the Group One table behind Germany who have full points from five games and have scored 40 goals without conceding any so far. It is the beginning of a run of three consecutive home games for the Irish as they play Russia on May 7 and Croatia on June 14 before heading to Russia on June 19.

“Being realistic the game against Russia is even more important for us than the Germany game. Germany are second in the world ranking and have just won the Algarve Cup. They are European champions and have made an awesome start to the group with five wins, five clean sheets and 40 goals. Anything we get from this game will be a bonus but we have to get something from the games against Russia, home and away, if we want to get a play-off spot,” said Ronan.

“We’ve made a good start to the campaign and I was delighted with our response to the poor performance in Croatia in October. We are making strides and the recent results in Cyprus showed we are on the right track. Germany will be another opportunity for us to measure ourselves against one of the world’s best team and see where we are at.”

Admission for the game will €5 for adults and €2 for U16s and students and Ronan is hoping that plenty of Irish fans will make their way to Tallaght for the game.

“It is a rare opportunity to see one of the best teams in the world play in Dublin in a competitive match. If we are to get anything out of the game we will need all the support we can get and I’m hoping that people who may never have been to a women’s international before will come along. I think they’ll be surprised by what they see and hopefully they will come back for the Russia game in May.”
