Ronan announces Senior Women's Squad to face Austria
Republic of Ireland Senior Women's Team manager Sue Ronan has announced a 20-player squad for an international friendly against Austria at Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday, June 18, at 7.30pm.
The match is part of the squad's build up to the FIFA Women's World Cup qualifying campaign which will kick off in September with a home game against Slovakia.
Fifteen of the players named in squad for the Austria game were part of the 22 strong panel that finished eighth in the Cyprus Cup last March after winning a group that contained Northern Ireland, South African and World No.16 South Korea.
Returning to the squad for this match are defender Sophie Perry, midfielders Julie Ann Russell, Shannon McDonnell and Marie Therese McDonnell plus striker Fiona O'Sullivan.
Nine of the squad are drawn from clubs in the Bus Éireann Women's National League with newly crowned champions Raheny United and Cup winners Peamount United supplying four each.
"The Cyprus Cup was a great boost for the squad's confidence and we will be looking to build on that against Austria. Some of the players who weren't available for the Cyprus Cup have been drafted in for this game so I can get a closer look at them and I'll have an opportunity to assess more players during the World University Games in Russia next month," said Ronan.
The Cyprus Cup results allowed Ireland to jump two places in the FIFA World Rankings to 32nd and, ironically, Austria dropped two places to 34th. This will be Austria's fourth match this year. After losing their opening two fixtures to Belgium (0-2) and Italy (1-3) they beat Slovenia, who are in Ireland's World Cup group, 3-1 away last Sunday.
Admission to the game will be €10 and U16s will be admitted free of charge.
