Regions' Cup team defeated in Romania

Ireland's Regions Cup side suffered only their second defeat in 17 games after a 2-1 loss to Buzau (Romania).
17th Sep 2018

Gerry Davis's side went into Sunday's game having only lost to Croatia in the 2017 Final in Turkey and were confident of getting off to a good start.

However on a night of very few chances Ireland failed to live up to their ranking of number two in Europe against an efficient Romanian side who took a 2-0 lead with 15-minutes to go with goals from midfielder Dragos Ionita and substitute Mihai Modruz.

With four minutes to go Stephen Kelly pulled one back for the Republic after some excellent work by Mark Horgan at the back post, but we never really threatened the Romanian keeper who had very little to do all night.

Davis's side go into Wednesday’s game needing all three points against West Slovakia (Slovakia) and hope that North Riding Football League (England) get a result against Buzau (Romania).

Republic of Ireland: Brendan O’Connell, Chris Higgins, Mark Horgan, Stephen Kelly, Danny O’ Neill, Hughie O'Donovan, David Stack (Shane Ryan 64), Jimmy Carr (Simon Falvey 69), Tijani Albor, Eoin Hayes, Kevin O’ Connell (Cian O'Connor 79).
