PREVIEW: Bell calls on WU17s to bounce back
In Wednesday’s match, the team slipped to a 5-1 defeat as Finland proved to be strong in the midfield, and capitalised upon chances up top.
Although the result was unwanted, the team has a bright future ahead. Of the 20 players on the squad against Finland, 10 are still 16 years old and eligible for the U16 team for the upcoming season.
Tomorrow, manager Dave Bell hopes that the team will focus on gaining more experience ahead of their UEFA European Championship qualifiers.
“Our 5-1 defeat was against Finland’s U18 team all of whom have played in last year’s UEFA U17 elite tournament, and although at this level we do look to try and win games, it was a game in which I thought the girls would gain great experience from especially against a very physical and talented Finland team," said Bell.
“These friendlies will, without a doubt, help our players to understand how much better we all need to become if we want to win our own qualifiers and hopefully play in the UEFA elites next March/April.
“Tomorrow’s game gives me another chance to look at a few more of the players from different areas of the team, and also gives those players a chance to impress the coaching staff and myself before we finalise our squad for the UEFA qualifiers in October.
“Only Tiegan Ruddy, Heather Payne, and Sadhbh Doyle remain from my last year’s squad, and the experience they had being regulars in my last season will certainly help the new players who earn one of the 15 spots up for grabs in this season's squad.
“I’m also hoping the experience and knowledge gained by all these young girls in the last game will help them achieve a better result in tomorrow’s game.”
