Mohan names U17 squad for Croatia friendlies

REPUBLIC of Ireland U17 Head Coach Tom Mohan has named his squad for two friendly international games against Croatia later this month.
11th Feb 2015

The Irish will meet their Croatian counterparts in two fixtures in Zagreb on Tuesday, February 24 (11.00am), and Thursday, February 26 (1.00pm).

“These games will be against strong opposition which is important with our UEFA U17 Elite Qualifying Round games in March,” said Mohan.

“It’s vital that our players have a stiff challenge put up to them before the qualifiers. It gives them an opportunity to perform at the required level.

“The performance of the players is number one for me. Are they capable of playing at this level? Can they fit into our style of play - attacking, defending and transitions. We’ll also be looking to see if we can step up to take on the level of opponent we’ll be facing in the qualifiers.

“We had 32 players in for training games against the Irish Schools and Bohemians U19s last month with a mixture of home-based and UK-based players. It helped make up my mind on a number of players who have now been added to the squad for Croatia.

“Those games opened the door for players and the door always remains open to players who show they are up to the required level.”

Ireland will travel to Poland in March to face the hosts, Greece and Belarus with the eight group winners and seven runners-up with the best record against the sides first and third in their section progress to the finals to join the hosts Bulgaria in the finals in May.
