REPUBLIC of Ireland U17 Head Coach Tom Mohan has named his squad for the forthcoming UEFA U17 Championships Qualifying Round fixtures which take place at home next week.

Mohan’s side will kick-off their campaign against Gibraltar in Athlone next Monday, September 22 (7.30pm), then face the Faroe Islands in Galway two days later before wrapping up the group against Scotland in Longford on Saturday week.

The Irish boss is confident his side can meet the challenge of the qualifying round. They recently played in an excellent preparation tournament in Hungary which featured games against the hosts, Malta and Serbia.

“It’s always different when you get to the competitive UEFA games. A few of the guys had that experience last year. We’ve played the tournament in Hungary last month which were tough competitive games which we hope will stand the lads in good stead,” said Mohan.

“We’ve got Gibraltar first and we’ve experience of playing them last year and a fair few of those players we met are eligible again this year so we know the standard they are capable of. We’ll give them the respect they deserve.

“There was a lot of good performances from the boys in Hungary but we probably should have scored more goals there. We have added a few more attacking options such as Gerry McDonagh and Steven Kinsella who can score goals. I also feel a lot of the players will be more match fit now after pre-season.

“We’re delighted to be hosting the tournament. We’ll get in and prepare as best we can. It’s great to have the games in Ireland. It means less disruption for us and we are looking forward to good local support.”
