REPUBLIC of Ireland U17 Head Coach Tom Mohan has announced his squad for the forthcoming UEFA U17 Championships Elite Qualifying Round games which take place at the end of this month.

The Irish travel to Serbia for a testing group which includes the host nation plus Germany and Georgia. The top side will progress to the finals tournament in Malta which runs from May 9 to 21.

Mohan's side recently beat Austria 2-1 and drew with the same opposition in two friendly games in Dublin but the Irish boss is expecting a serious test in Serbia.

"In the Austria games we did some experimenting and used players who'd done very well and the games were a real test for the players. A number of them came through the test," said Mohan.

"What we learned from those games was how the players cope with the intensity of it. Austria were high intensity both attacking and defending and that was a challenge for our lads. They showed great character in both games to get back from 1-0 down each time.

"You expect top European sides to be very efficient with the ball but then it's down to what chances are created and if they're taken. We defended well when we had to and then looked to create our own opportunities. In the end up their keeper was as busy as ours in the end.

"These games are a pressurising situation for the players. It's part of character building, there's a never say die attitude in them which is pleasing. We've shown too that we have players with the ability to keep the ball and create chances.

"We're looking forward to having the players in and working on the areas that need to improve upon. If you see Germany in any group in international football they'll be favourites, Serbia as hosts will have an advantage but it's a good way for us to go into the competition. Georgia are another side who've got to this stage on merit and have to be respected.

"When you are in there you want to be in competing, make life difficult for the opposition and create chances yourself. We'll go over there ready to give it our best shot."

One more player will be added to the Irish travelling party closer to the fixtures.
