Meet the creator of Barry The Bodhrán
When schools around the country were alerted to a competition to come up with an idea for a mascot for only the third official UEFA tournament to be hosted on these shores, an 11-year-old from County Wexford had something in mind.
Clara Hogan, from Scoil Mhuire, Barntown, felt that the mascot needed to have a clear link to Irish culture but she wanted to avoid what had been largely done before. So she started drawing.
The final submission was of a cheery character named Barry, who was shaped as a Bodhrán (which is an Irish frame drum). It was then selected by a panel of judges as being the best entry and then created.
Clara has already taken part in an official launch of Barry The Bodhrán and will lead the Republic of Ireland Under-17 team out in their opening game of the tournament in Tallaght Stadium on Friday, May 3.
