Career Summary

Leon Best made his senior Republic of Ireland debut in the friendly match against Nigeria, which was played at Craven Cottage on May 29th, 2009. He had previously made one appearance for the Under-21 team, against Montenegro at Terryland Park in March 2008. Best began his career at Notts County before moving to Southampton. After several successful loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Bournemouth and Yeovil, Best signed for Coventry City in July 2007.

He played in the 2010 World Cup qualifying series on 10/10/'09 when Ireland drew 2-2 with World Cup champions, Italy and four days later against Montenegro. He came in as substitute for Kevin Doyle against Italy and replaced Noel Hunt against Montenegro. Leon was again introduced as substitute in the World Cup play-off against France at Croke Park and in the friendly against Brazil in March 2010.

Leon was transferred from Coventry to Newcastle United on a three and a half year contract in January 2010. His manager was former Irish international, Chris Hughton.

He was on the move again in the Summer of 2012 when he was transferred to Blackburn Rovers. Unfortunately he suffered a serious ligament injury to his knee in pre-season and is not expected to be fit until 2014.
