Japan edge Ireland out in World Cup quarter-final

The Republic of Ireland women's U17 side take on Japan in the FIFA Women's World Cup quarter-final in Trinidad, tonight at 12 midnight. The game will be streamed live by RTE.ie and will also be shown live on Eurosport 2.

The Republic of Ireland women's U17 side take on Japan in the FIFA Women's World Cup quarter-final in Trinidad, tonight at 12 midnight. The game will be streamed live by RTE.ie and will also be shown live on Eurosport 2.


Ireland go into the quarter-finals in superb form following their emergence from Group D as winners ahead of Brazil, Canada and Ghana. Ireland suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brazil in the opening game but they got their World Cup dream back on track with two successive victories over North American Champions, Canada (1-0) and Ghana (3-0). The winners of tonight's game will play defending champions, North Korea in the semi-final.

90 mins: A megan Campbell throw-in is headed just over the bar by Rianna Jarrett.

89 mins: Double substitution here for Ireland. Tanya Kennedy and Harriett Scott come on for Stacie Donnelly and Siobhán Killeen respectively.

85mins: Grace Moloney palms away a Kyokawa free-kick for a corner.

81 mins: Siobhán Killeen works her way into Japan's box and plays it to Jarrett who squars it to Stacie Donnelly on the edge of the six yard box but her tame shot is blocked by Hirao.

76 mins: Grace Moloney comes to Ireland's rescue as she bravely comes off her line and clear the ball ahead of the on-rushing substitute,  Kyokawa.


70 mins: Megan Campbell forces a save from Hirao with a free-kick from 25 yards while Rianna Jarrett replaces Aileen Gilroy moments later.

67 mins: As Ireland go close from a corner, Japan go on the counter attack and as Yokohama picks up the ball outside the Irish box under the attention of Ciara O'Brien, she turns and unleashes an unstoppable shot from 15 yards giving Moloney absolutely no chance.

60 mins: Naomoto has a stinging shot on goal but it goes just right and wide.

53mins: GOAL for Denise O'Sullivan. Stacie Donnelly plays a ball over the top for O'Sullivan and as goalkeeper, Hirao and her Takagi defender collide on the edge of the box, Denise O'Sullivan nips in and strokes the ball into the empty net, evading the challenges of the on-rushing defenders. Game on!!!

52 mins: Dora Gorman wins a free-kick 30 yards from goal but Jessica Gleeson puts the free-kick just wide.

50 mins: Megan Campbell hits her 40 yard free-kick just wide of the post.

46 mins: Japan get the game back underway. Ireland need a big second half performance here.


Half-time: Japan go into the half with a 1-0 lead and they could have extended their lead before the break were it not for the heroics of Grace Moloney and her defence.

43 mins: Ireland under serious pressure here. Kato runs through on goal and her shot is saved by the on-rushing Grace Moloney and Ciara O'Brien is on-hand to clear it off the line.

42 mins: Nakada squares it to Kawashima in the box and Jennifer Byrne gets back just in time to block the ball for a corner.

39 mins: Yokohama has been Jaman's most dangerous player and she goes close once again from 15 yards but Moloney saves her stinging shot.

34 mins: Goal to Japan. Megan Campbell fouls Yokohama in the box and Maomoto steps up and puts the ball past the out-stretched Grace Moloney.

33 mins: Siobhán Killeen makes an interception in midfield and has a pop from 25 yards. Saved again by the keeper.

30 mins: Megan Campbell fires a free-kick just over from 30 yards while Japan instantly go down the other end but Nakada fires her shot wide from 10 yards.

23 mins: Incredible skill from Denise O'Sullivan who controls the ball on the edge of the box but her effort is well saved by the keeper. Fantastic end to end action here.

20 mins: Siobhán Killeen makes a darting run down the right wing, she cuts back inside but her tame shot from 25 yards is easily saved by Hirao.

18 mins: Yokohama once again collects the ball deep inside the Irish half and she gets half a yard on Jennifer Byrne but her right footed shot is just wide.

16 mins: Japanese top scorer, Yokohama turns in from the left and unleashes a powerful effort at Moloney in Irelands goal but she makes a remarkable save to deny the dangerous attacker.

13 mins: Ireland just shading it in these early stages. Denise O'Sullivan looks lively up front while the central midfield pairing of Gorman and Grant are bossing the midfield at the moment.

2 mins: Ireland have the first shot of the night as captain, Dora Gorman misses the target from 30 yards.
