Ireland WU17: Bell names squad for Iceland trip

Republic of Ireland Women's Under-17 Head Coach Colin Bell has named a 20-player squad for the upcoming friendly double-header against Iceland.
14th Feb 2019

The WU17 squad are set to fly to Reykjavik, Iceland on Sunday, February 17 for the matches on Monday, February 18 and Wednesday, February 20 as Ireland step up preparations for their UEFA Elite Round fixtures.

Colin Bell's side will travel to Scotland in March for their Elite Round games against Germany, Norway and hosts Scotland as they look to qualify for the UEFA European Championships in Bulgaria in the summer.

Peamount United midfielder Della Doherty is set to return to the squad following injury, having missed the qualifying round fixtures in October.

Emily Kraft will travel with the squad having made her senior international debut for Ireland in the 1-0 defeat to Belgium in January. Shelbourne duo Jessica Ziu and Emily Whelan, who have also been capped at senior international level, are also selected for the squad.

"These are two important tests for us as we look to prepare for the elite round stage," said WU17 Head Coach Colin Bell.

"Iceland have proven in the past to be a quality, physical outfit and this will be exactly the type of opposition we need to get ourselves to the highest performance level possible.

"To face Germany, Norway and Scotland in our elite round presents a difficult task but we've got plenty of quality within the squad and the levels of improvement I've seen from the players over the time I've worked with them has been fantastic.

"We're going to have two days of training in Ireland before heading to Iceland so I'm really looking forward to an intensive week of training and matches with the squad."
