The Republic of Ireland Women’s U16s were today (Tuesday) beaten on penalties after a 3-3 finish against their Czech counterparts this afternoon. A sunny Frank Cooke Park in Dublin was the venue for a very exciting game of football, which saw two evenly matched teams score six goals during eighty minutes of play.

After the game kicked off at 12 pm, the Czechs were first on the scoreboard with 24 minutes gone when Teresa Szewieczkova weaved in through the Irish defence before setting up Antoine Starova right in front of goal.

Ireland replied immediately in the 25th minute when Jamie Flynn attacked down the left wing scoring from an almost impossible angle making it 1-1 during a lively first half, where play was concentrated around centre field.

Ireland looked strong throughout, with midfielders covering lots of ground between them. The girls in green looked certain to go ahead before the interval when Jessica Gargan delivered a fantastic ball, which was saved by the Czech goalkeeper Alexandra Horakova, who was under pressure throughout.

The tempo slowed down for the start of the second half, with the game coming to life when Ireland were awarded a penalty 18 minutes in after Meagan Connolly was taken down in the box. Meagan took the penalty herself and fired the shot home making it 2-1 to Ireland.

Proving how equally matched each side were, the Czech Republic were awarded a penalty two minutes later, which resulted in Irish goalkeeper Brooke Dunne making a fantastic save. The Czechs displayed how difficult they were to contain however, as Andrea Maverova headed the Czech’s second goal into the top right hand corner of the Irish goal after a fantastic cross from Antoine Starova.

Late Czech substitution Veronika Masova was awarded very quickly after her introduction with a sneaky goal in the left hand corner of the Irish net from a successful corner pass from Tereza Szewieczkova. Scoreline Ireland 2-3 Czech Republic.

Ireland’s efforts paid off with an injury time goal from captain Savannah McCarthy after a fantastic performance throughout the game hitting home an equaliser from a sideline throw from Roma McLaughlin. Full time Ireland 3-3 Czech Republic.

The game then went straight to penalties, with Ireland sadly showing their inexperience scoring just one goal (from Meagan Lynch)in four attempts. The Czech Republic scored each of their attempts from Pavlina Hrobska, Lucie Houzarova and Tereza Szewieczkova to win 3-1 on penalties.

Ireland are up against Belgium next in Frank Cooke Park again tomorrow, with the Czech Republic facing Wales in St Kevin’s Boys, Shanowen Road. Both games kick-off  at 5pm, and entry is free.
