Ireland move to top of UEFA Regions Cup rankings
UEFA have issued the provisional coefficients for the UEFA Regions Cup 2016-17 and Ireland sits proudly ahead of Germany, Russia, Spain and Italy at the very top of the rankings.
Irish amateur football secured its Holy Grail this summer when Smith’s Eastern Region IRL captured the UEFA Regions Cup Final after a 1-0 win over Zagreb Region at Tallaght Stadium.
Smith believes that reaching the top spot in the UEFA coefficient rankings is another endorsement of the work put in by the players and coaching staff over several years.
“It is a tremendous achievement and to say you are ranked No 1 in Europe in any circumstances is something to be very proud of,” said Smith.
“Those outside the camp may not be aware of how much work has been put into reaching this level but no stone was left unturned to get to this stage and that’s from the players, staff and administration.
“Winning the UEFA Regions Cup itself doesn’t automatically give you top spot in the rankings, it is a reflection of the work put in over a number of years. We’ve progressed to this level.
“It is something that all those involved with amateur football in Ireland should rightly be proud of.”
