Ireland defeat Ghana 3-0 to advance to quarter finals

The Republic of Ireland women's U17 side play their final FIFA World Cup, Group D game against Ghana at 12 am (Irish time) at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago, knowing that a victory will send them through to the quarter finals of the competition. Currently, Ireland sit on top of the group on goal difference with all four teams on three points after two rounds of games. In the other Group D encounter, Brazil take on Canada and barring a high score draw in that game, Ireland could still make the quarter finals if they draw with Ghana. 90 mins: Ireland beat Ghana 3-0 while Brazil finish 2-0 winners against Canada. Ireland will now face Japan in the quarter finals. FULL REPORT TO FOLLOW.

86 mins: Emma Hansberry comes on for Aileen Gilroy.

77 mins: GOAL! Aileen Gilroy scores a screamer with a first-time shot on the right wing from 25 yards after a sublime ball from Jennifer Byrne. Gilroy is challenged late and is knocked to the ground. Not sure she knows too much about that goal.

75 mins: Harriett Scott comes on for Siobhán Killeen.

74 mins: Okyere has the ball in the net for Ghana but the goal is disallowed for a foul on Moloney.

69 mins: Rianna Jarrett comes on for Stacie Donnelly.

65 mins: Real Ghana pressure now, A wicked shot from outside the box by Okyere is tipped around the post by Moloney and from the resulting corner, Ghana have a goal-bound header cleared off the line by Stacie Donnelly.

64 mins: After some good play, Ghana go close through Sumala but Grace Moloney saves comfortably.

63 mins: Jennifer Byrne goes close from a long throw from Megan Campbell.

58 mins: Megan Campbell goes close again as her goalbound header from a corner is scrambled away for another corner by Otoo.

55 mins: Denise O'Sullivan comes agonisingly close. She chases down a defensive ball and chatches the goalkeeper, Otoo flat-footed by charging down her clearance. The goalkeeper reacts quicker to the rebounding ball to avert the danger.

51 mins: Brazil are two up against Canada. Brazil go top of the group on head-to head.


45 mins: Ghana get the second half underway. As things stand, Ireland lead the group on goal difference with Brazil leading 1-0 against Canada in Trinidad. The winners of the group meet Japan in the next round while the runners-up face European champions, Spain.

Half-time: Ireland go into the break 2-0 after a blistering game of football between two very physical teams. Grace Moloney, Ireland's goalkeeper is in the form of her life. Just before the break, she denied Beatrice Sesu from her point blank header from a corner. We are in for a very interesting second half here at the Dwight Yorke Stadium!

45 mins: Aileen Gilroy bursts down the left wing and swings it into Denise Sullivan who stretches to head the ball but it goes just over the bar.

44 mins: Incredible scenes. Mary Essiful puts it to the left and WIDE. Ireland let off the hook!

42 mins: Ireland in trouble here. Aileen Gilroy brings down Ghana's captain, Sesu in the box. Penalty to Ghana.

36 Mins: GOAL! This is incredible stuff. Ghanian defender, Antwi plays a short pass back to her goalkeeper, Otoo who plays it straight back to the defender inside the 18 yard box. The ever-dangerous Denise O'Sullivan chases the defender down, lays it off to Stacie Donnelly who strokes the ball into the roof of the net from 10 yards. Ireland looking strong here. 

34 mins: This game is getting very intense. Ghana are coming into the game more and more at this stage. There is a live feed available on FIFA.com - a thoroughly enjoyable game of football!!

28 mins: The Irish are playing champagne football at the moment, waiting for their opportunity in front of goal. Siobhán Killeen skips past her defender on the left but her shot goes just over the bar.

25 mins: Denise O'Sullivan is causing all sorts of problems for Ghana as she makes a darting run through the defence but is snuffed out at the last minute.

23 mins: Ghana defender, Yiadom has a long range effort but Moloney saves comfortably.

20 mins: In the other Group D encounter, Brazil have taken the lead against Canada through Paula.


19 mins: Stacie Donnelly wins the ball at the edge of Ghana's box and lays it off to Denise O'Sullivan who sees her effort go inches over the bar.


14 mins: A real tenacious start from Ireland here. The Irish midfield have really settled into the game against the physical Ghanians.


5 mins: GOAL! This is an unbelievable start for the young 'Girls in Green'. Denise Campbell is hauled down on the left wing and Megan Campbell steps up and floats her cross come shot into the top corner of the stranded Ghana keepers' head. Ireland bossing the game at the moment.


1 min: Ireland get the game underway here in Scarborough, Tobago.


6.50 pm (local time): Just ten minutes to kick-off here at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago. Noel King sticks with the same side who defeated Canada 1-0 last Thursday.
