Ireland CP: Ireland suffer 4-1 defeat in World Cup
Four goals in the second half from Rasul Atashafrouz was enough to give the Iranians a victory after Ireland led their opponents at the break.
The first chance of the game fell to Iran with Mark Barry forced to tip a long range effort around the post to keep the game level.
Iran controlled large spells of the early exchanges but it was Ireland who scored first after 15 minutes. A cross-field ball was played over top of the defence and Dillon Sheridan took one touch before firing beyond goalkeeper Alireza Zare.
Paul Breen’s side defended resolutely and restricted their their opponents to long-range efforts and were good value for their lead at half-time.
But Ireland were hit with two quick-fire goals after the break. Rasul Atashafrouz scored from the penalty spot after a spotkick was awarded for handball and then minutes later Iran turned the game on its head when Atashafrouz’s well placed direct free-kick found the bottom right-hand corner.
With Ireland looking for a way back into the game Iran capitalise on the space at the back and Atashafrouz completed his hat-trick on 57 minutes before adding a fourth in injury time.
Ireland sit in second place on goal difference but must win on Friday against the USA by three clear goals to assure qualification from the group.
Speaking after the game Ireland Head Coach Paul Breen said: “We’re all very disappointed with the result. Our game plan was working for 40 minutes and we restricted them to efforts from long distance. We conceded the penalty and then we conceded shortly after from a free kick.
“We were chasing the game and that meant we had to come out and attack and that’s where Iran got their third and fourth goals.
“As you can imagine playing in the Spanish heat takes its toll on players and that had an impact but we’ll look to the USA game and go up against them with confidence and do what we can to qualify out of the group.”
