Ireland begin European Nations Cup with historic victory
Ireland 2-0 Switzerland
IRELAND'S Powerchair football team created history with a 2-0 victory over Switzerland in the opening game of the inaugural European Nations Cup at the University of Limerick tonight.
After a spectacular opening ceremony, the fireworks continued on the pitch as the two sides tore into each other.
In an evenly contested affair Ireland bagged the lead just before the break when Thomas Winters fired home.
Nick Harrison's side then grabbed control of the game in the second half when Aoife McNicholl hit the target.
It will be a demanding week for the Irish and they have two games tomorrow with Denmark in the morning followed by France in the evening encounter.
"It was solid performance. We created lots of chances. I suppose we had to overcome a bout of initial nerves early on but after that the team settled well," said Harrison.
"The opener was a super goal from Thomas Winters and so was the second from our captain Aoife McNicholl. Congrats to Switzerland for a good opener to the tournament."
IRELAND: Thomas Winters, Aoife McNicholl, Thomas Donogher, Emer O'Sullivan (C), Patrick Flanagan, Emmet Daly, Keith Hayes, Neil Sheehan.
