Darron Gibson (Manchester United) today withdrew from the Republic of Ireland squad for next Saturday's World Cup qualifying tie against Bulgaria in Sofia. He is suffering from a groin strain.

Gibson did not figure in the friendly match on Friday last when Ireland came from behind to draw with Nigeria 1-1 at Craven Cottage in London. Manager Giovanni Trapattoni took the opportunity to introduce six players to senior international football in the course of the match.

Two of Ireland's most senior players who played for 45 minutes against Nigeria sat out today's training session in London.

Shay Given (Manchester City) and Robbie Keane (Spurs) did not take a full part in the training session purely as a precaution. It is expected that both will be fit to play against Bulgaria.
