Colin O'Brien's side produced a disciplined display and rarely seemed overly threatened by the Dutch attack with Irish keeper Lorcan Callaghan and his back four in control.

Netherlands keeper Jasper Schendelaar had to react quickly to deny Glen McAuley an opening goal in the 12th minute when the striker's vicious free-kick bounced at his feet.

Ireland took the lead in the 22nd minute when the hard-running Aaron Connolly burst past the Dutch defence, held off his marker and sent in a low angled strike that bounced back to him off Schendelarr's feet and Connolly reacted well to convert the rebound.

After the break Ireland continued to push for a second goal and McAuley forced a top class save from the Dutch keeper in the 50th minute.

Ireland also had a penalty claim waved away. Although the Dutch had shots from distance little truly threatened until the 71st minute when Daishawn Redan struck an upright with a powerful strike from the edge of the box.

The two sides will meet again at Pike Rovers FC's ground in Crossagalla on Thursday (12pm).

"I felt it was an excellent performance from our side against very good opposition. We know that our players can step up to the tempo required at this level of the game and they showed that today," said Irish coach Colin O'Brien.

Colin O’Brien's youngsters will meet their Dutch counterparts at Janesboro)'s Pearse Stadium on Tuesday (6.00pm) then the two sides meet again at Pike Rovers' ground at Crossagalla on Thursday (12pm).

"Our preparation has gone well since we met up on Saturday evening and the players are all looking forward to a really tough challenge," said O'Brien.

“We played the Dutch three times last year at U15s level and did well in two of those games. They play possession football and at an explosive pace which our players need to get used to.

“A good percentage of our players this week were either involved against Scotland in January or the games before Christmas is Poland. We know they’ll experience a high tempo game in both these fixtures and they’ll have to adapt."

O'Brien feels it is beneficial to expose the Irish players to the highest level possible at U15 level as it will help their overall development to be tested by stronger opposition.

“The big aim for us was for the players is to be exposed to top quality opposition which we have secured for them. The reason is because we want them to experience the tempo at that level and the challenge is to maintain that and repeat it over 80 minutes," he added.

“There's always another level. It’s a learning process and this is the first step of the international ladder. We feel they have shown that they can adapt even against very good sides already this season."
