Irish U17s go down to Hungary defeat

Tom Mohan's side reached the UEFA U17 Finals last season and are looking to get the qualification process off to a good start in Finland next month.

The Irish started well with Stevenage's Michael Cregan almost breaking through on goal in the opening seconds.

Cregan had a powerful effort saved by the home keeper in the fifth minute and Ireland looked to be finding their feet despite the testing 37 degree heat.

Irish keeper Mark Travers was tested following a Hungary corner in the 18th minute and did well to keep the effort out but less than a minute later the home side broke the deadlock.

Levente Sazbo found the net after Travers and his defence failed to deal with a dangerous ball into the box and the Hungarian attacker headed over the Irish keeper for a simple finish.

Tyreke Wilson produced a testing free-kick for Ireland in the 33rd minute but the strike shaved the outside of the keeper's right hand post. Two minutes before the break Jayson Molumby's cross found the head of Cregan but he headed narrowly wide.

Ireland started well in the second half and had two chances in the opening minutes but each went wide of the home goal.

Unfortunately for Mohan's side they fell behind to a second goal in the 61st minute when Wilson conceded a penalty and Mark Bencze fired home from the spot-kick.

Wilson was then in the right place to make an impressive clearance off the line in the 67th minute.

Rian O'Sullivan had a shot over in the 70th minute but neither side really threatened a further goal. The sides will meet again on Thursday morning.

Tom Mohan's side reached the UEFA U17 Championships Finals in Bulgaria last season and are now looking towards qualifying for the 2016 finals in Azerbaijan.

Ireland were drawn in Qualifying Round Group 3 which takes place in Finland later this month. They meet the Finns on September 24 then Malta two days later before their final fixture against Sweden on September 29.

"We are expecting two good tests this week. The players came in on Saturday and we've worked with them for a few days now to prepare for these games," said Mohan.

"Between a training game with UK-based players and assessment of home-based players we've looked at more than 60 players directly while we've also watched a lot of players in the SSE Airtricity U17 League.

" It is very warm here so that will make for an interesting test for the players. These fixtures will help us get prepared for the qualifiers next month. We have some new faces in and we're looking forward to working with them.

"The likes of Kian Flanagan from Crystal Palace and Canice Carroll from Oxford United will be interesting to see how they settle in while Caoimhin Fowler and Ryan Nolan are two Irish-born players with clubs outside of the UK that will also be interesting to work with.

"We've also brought in two players who can play U16 this year in Aaron Connolly and Lee O'Connor both doing very well in the Mayo Cup so it'll be good to see how they do at this age-group."

Mohan's options were limited by injuries to a number of players including Anthony Scully, Aaron O'Driscoll and Glen McAuley.
