Scotland 0 - 1 Republic of Ireland

A single goal from substitute Amber Barrett proved to be the difference in a tight game, which saw Vera Pauw's team finish off their qualifying campaign in the best possible way.
Pauw had stated before the campaign began that the goal was to reach the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and that is exactly what they achieved.
Scotland had the opportunity to seize control of the game early on when they were awarded a penalty, but goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan produced a fantastic save to deny Caroline Weir.
Ireland pushed back with Megan Campbell's long throw-inss wreaking havoc - one of which even ended up in the back of the net. A first goal looked likely for Ireland as the first half wore on.
Áine O'Gorman had a great chance to score before Scotland cleared off the line just before the interval. Pauw's team were building in confidence at the right time.
After the break, Ireland continued to press in search of that goal and it finally arrived seven minutes after Barrett came off the bench when she raced onto a through ball by Denise O'Sullivan to cooly fire in.
The home side tried to draw level but they could not find a way past a stubborn Irish backline. And so Ireland were the victors and were able to celebrate a historic win.
Scotland: Lee Alexander; Lisa Evans (Christy Grimshaw 65), Rachel Corsie, Sophie Howard, Nicola Docherty; Erin Cuthbert, Caroline Weir, Samantha Kerr (Abi Harrison 76); Fiona Brown (Emma Mitchell 65), Martha Thomas, Claire Emslie.
Republic of Ireland: Courtney Brosnan; Niamh Fahey, Louise Quinn, Diane Caldwell; Jamie Finn; Megan Campbell; Áine O’Gorman, Lily Agg, Denise O’Sullivan, Katie McCabe; Heather Payne (Amber Barrett 65).
Referee: Esther Staubli (Switzerland).
The game will be played in Hampden Park on Tuesday, October 11th with a record crowd expected for a Scottish women’s competitive fixture at home.
This will be the 22nd meeting between the two teams at senior women’s level but none of the previous encounters were as important as this one with a potential route to the World Cup at stake.
Vera Pauw’s team are the third-ranked team in the Second Round of the Play-Offs, behind both Switzerland and Iceland, who face Wales and Portugal respectively in their games.
The two best ranked winners – based on qualification record – will proceed directly to the World Cup. The third winner qualifies for the FIFA Women’s Inter-Confederation Play-Off in February 2023.

QUOTES
Republic of Ireland WNT Manager Vera Pauw
“The target when we started this campaign was to qualify for the World Cup and we remain in a position to achieve that. We expected Sweden to top our Group, so we knew that going through the route of the Play-Offs was a possibility and therefore is not daunting to us. It is another massive challenge and we must play the game of our lives to win it.
“We have full respect for Scotland, who are a very direct team with a lot of excellent players and they fully deserved to beat Austria in the first round of this Play-Off series. We have watched them closely and know that we will be facing a very difficult opponent, who will also have a home crowd behind them.
“We believe in ourselves and trust in each other – players and staff – but we know that we have to be at our very best if we are to win this game. Making it to the World Cup has always been the dream.”
