Shane Long was the Republic of Ireland saviour with a stoppage time equaliser to very much keep alive hopes of qualification for Euro2016 in France.

In a cracking Group D qualifier at a packed Aviva Stadium, Poland shaded the first half to lead from the 26th minute through Slawomir Peszko.

Ireland battled back and utterly dominated the second period, hitting the woodwork twice before deservedly levelling with a coolly taken goal from substitute Long in the first minute of added time to raise the roof of the Dublin 4 venue.

The result means Ireland remain fourth in the pool on eight points, three points behind leaders Poland and two off both Germany and Scotland who visit Dublin in Ireland’s next qualifier on June 13th.

Ireland manager Martin O’Neill rang the changes following the defeat to Scotland in November with seven changes in his starting XI.

Shay Given came in for his 128th cap, and first competitive appearance since Italy at the Euro 2012 finals. Marc Wilson and Robbie Brady came into defence; Glenn Whelan and James McCarthy returned in the central midfield roles while Wes Hoolahan started in behind skipper Robbie Keane in attack.

Likewise, Poland boss Adam Nawalka also made a host of personnel changes with six switches from their 4-0 win in Georgia the same night.

With a terrific atmosphere, in no small part helped by a very large Polish contingent, the game was frantic from the off with both sides looking edgy and nervous as they searched to settle into a pattern.

Ireland manufactured the first effort on goal on ten minutes. Brady took a quick free kick to Hoolahan who availed of a bit of space to run on towards the box, though his tame shot was wide.

The Poles had to wait until the 20th minute to threaten Given’s goal with Grzegorz Krychowiak heading wide from a free kick by Maciej Rybus.

The visitors then stunned Ireland in punishing poor defending to take the lead six minutes later.

Brady initially gave the ball away near the touchline, with Wilson also outfoxed by the run of Peszko, who raced into the area before hitting a crisply struck angled drive past Given into the far corner.

Ireland responded with the lively Hoolahan threading a delightful ball in behind for the run of Coleman. The right-back just over-ran the ball, though, and the chance went begging.

A cameo from Aiden McGeady came close to seeing Ireland level two minutes before the interval. Collecting Brady’s ball in from the left, the Ireland  winger nipped past two Poles to dink a left-footed effort just wide of Lukasz Fabiański’s far post.

With Jonathan Walters pushed up front with Keane, Ireland were inches from an equaliser nine minutes into the second half. Brady whipped over a cross from the left which came off the head of Poland defender Kamil Glik to hit the far post.

Minutes later, Brady curled a free kick over the crossbar before defender Wilson, up for Brady’s corner, headed into the arms of Fabiański as Ireland continued to press for the equaliser.

James McClean came on for McGeady and almost made an immediate impact on 72 minutes. Skinning a defender down the left, the Ireland winger put over a cross that was headed against a post by Keane before being scrambled clear for a corner.

McClean was there again to create another opening ten minutes later to maintain the pressure. The Derry man’s low cross ran for Coleman, but the full-back’s hurried shot was well wide when he should have hit the target.

Finally, however, Ireland got their reward in the first minute of stoppage time.

Brady’s free kick initially forced a corner off Fabiański. Brady took it, man-of-the-match Hoolahan nodded the ball down for Long who took a good touch before shooting home from close range to give Ireland their fully deserved point.
