Tom Mohan's side produced another disciplined display but ultimately failed to convert their chances before being undone by a stunning goal from Tottenham's Marcus Edwards in the 71st minute.

Ireland started brightly and in the fifth minute JJ Lunney's corner found Josh Barrett at the back post but he headed into the side-netting.

After missing the target with a couple of long range frees, England came close to opening the scoring in the 13th minute when Ike Ugbo had a shot deflected narrowly wide.

In the 20th minute Luke Wade-Slater fed Barrett the Reading striker fired across goal but no Irish player was in a position to get a touch.

Eight minutes later an England corner was headed towards goal by Reece Oxford but Irish keeper Caoimhin Kelleher saved well.

Less than 60 seconds later Ugbo burst through on goal but he shot wide with only Kelleher to beat.

Ireland had a half-chance in the 32nd minute when Robbie McCourt made an excellent run before setting up Barrett but keeper Paul Woolston was out quickly to save at his feet.

England had a big chance one minute later when Ugbo had a shot cleared off the line by an Irish defender.

In the 34th minute a Nathan Holland shot from the edge of the box produced a brilliant Kelleher save before Corey O'Keeffe cleared as Ugbo tries to react to the rebound.

Four minutes into the second half Ireland had an excellent chance to open the scoring. Anthony Scully had a powerful shot saved by the keeper the rebound came to JJ Lunney but Woolston was up quickly to make a save and a defender cleared the danger.

In the 50th minute England sub Chris Willock fired in a low shot which was  comfortably held by Kelleher and in the 62th Zach Elbouzedi created a chance for Ireland when he fired the ball across goal but again nobody could get a touch.

The decisive moment came with the Edwards goal in the 71st minute. The playmaker showed great skill to carve out a shot from just outside the box and it flew to the roof of the Irish net.

Substitute Jamie Aherne did well to get on the ball and get in a low shot on the turn in the 77th minute but it was well gathered by keeper Woolston.

Two minutes into injury-time Stephy Mavididi burst through on goal but somehow blazed his shot wide with just Kelleher to beat.

In the dying moments Aherne fired over from outside the box after a brilliant run by Elbouzedi and the final whistle blew soon afterwards. Italy also progressed with England after drawing 1-1 with Netherlands in the other Group D fixture.

"We were beaten by a very good England side but I'm proud of how we played and the effort the players put in," said Mohan.

"The goal was a touch of class and unfortunately for us we couldn't convert the opportunities that came our way.

"It's been a great journey for everybody involved from the players to the staff and I believe we've all learned from it. We've shown people that Irish teams can play good football and with a bit of luck we might well have got out of our group."

ENGLAND: Woolston, Yates, Da Silva, Oxford, Collinge (Suliman 49), Holland, Wright, Ugbo (Mavididi 72), Edwards, Ndukwu (Willock 41), Kane.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: Kelleher, O'Keeffe, McCourt, Masterson, Leahy, Agyei-Tabi, Levingston (Elbouzedi 58), Lunney, Ronan, Barrett (Aherne 75),Wade-Slater (Scully 34).

Ireland U17s ready for Group D decision day

REPUBLIC of Ireland U17 head coach Tom Mohan believes his side can secure their place in the UEFA U17 Championships quarter-finals with victory against England in Stara Zagora tomorrow evening (5pm Irish).
12th May 2015

Mohan's side will progress from Group D with a 2-0 victory over the English no matter what happens in the other fixture - Netherlands v Italy - but a win for either the Dutch or Italians will see Ireland progress with a win of any sort against England.

The Irish boss knows that John Peacock's England are a top class side but has the belief that the Irish can show their own quality in the final group game.

"We've a few bumps and bruises but nobody else is a doubt outside of the obvious loss of Trevor Clarke with a foot injury sustained against Italy," said Mohan.

"Trevor has been excellent for us all season so is naturally a loss with his goals and work-rate but the door opens now for one of the other boys to come in and perform.

"We've got to keep getting the ball into the right areas and show our threat in front of goal and put the ball in the back of the net. I'd be worried if we weren't creating chances but we showed in the games against the Dutch and Italy that we can create.

"It's essentially knockout football now. We need to win to progress so it's in our own hands."

With many of the Irish players playing with English clubs Mohan knows that this fixture will have a real derby feel for both sides.

"It always is with Ireland-England games, especially with so many of the players being club-mates. It’s a great occasion. Our boys are really looking forward to it and would really love to put one over the old enemy."
