REPORT: Ireland 0-1 Wales

The Republic of Ireland suffered another UEFA Nations League defeat at the hands of Wales with a disappointing 0-1 defeat in the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday night.

A well struck free kick from Harry Wilson was enough to separate the sides and despite a spirited effort, Martin O'Neill's charges could not get an equaliser.

The Republic of Ireland made two changes from the side that faced Denmark on Saturday with Callum Robinson and Aiden O’Brien coming into Martin O'Neill's starting line up to replace Shane Long and Callum O’Dowda who had taken ill during the Denmark match.

Both sides tested their respective defences in the early exchanges with both Tom Lawrence and James McClean looking dangerous in attack. However neither side could muster an opportunity to test either goalkeeper.

A defensive error from Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey and his defence saw Cyrus Christie capitalise by stealing the ball from Matthew Smith but his curling effort was tipped around the post much to the relief of the Welsh defence.

Aiden O’Brien was next to try his luck from a initial long throw but his goal bound effort took a deflection and Wayne Hennessey was on hand to gather up the loose ball. Tyler Roberts had a low effort saved well by Darren Randolph, the Welsh striker did well to test the keeper who saw the effort late.

Shane Duffy had a great headed chance moments later that was saved well by Hennessey following a corner from McClean. Callum Robinson then had his goal-bound shot blocked by David Brooks after some excellent exchange play down the left from McClean and O’Brien.

The early second-half exchanges saw both teams trying to get in behind each others defence but to little avail. Wales however were to strike when Harry Wilson hit a fantastic free kick that Randolph could do nothing to save. Ireland pushed for an equaliser with a series of attacks into the Wales area, Jeff Hendrick had the pick of the chances when he forced a smart save out of Hennessey after a clever lay-off from Matt Doherty.

James Chester nearly doubled Wales lead from a corner, however his header just flashed wide at the back post. The visitors continued to press with Tyler Roberts flashing an effort over after breaking from an initial Irish attack. Second half substitute Scott Hogan had a great chance to equalise but his goal-bound effort was well saved by Hennessey following a Sean Maguire knock down. James McClean had a fine effort saved in the final minutes at the back post when Shane Long sent the ball into the area, despite Ireland's best efforts they couldn’t get the equaliser.
