The 2011 Umbro Women’s FAI Cup final will take place on Sunday, August 7 in Turners Cross at 3.00pm with Cork’s Wilton United playing host to Dublin side, St. Catherine’s.

St. Catherine’s may go into the game as slight favourites and they will want to avenge their 2009 final heartbreak when they lost out to St. Francis in the 2009 cup final in Richmond Park. The Dublin side sent out a clear warning to their competitors on the way to Sunday’s final which included a 7-0 thumping of Kilmacrennan Celtic in the semi-final after victories over the C.W.S.S.L and Raheny United in previous rounds.

However, Wilton United have proved to be no pushovers in this competition either and they have been on a free-scoring run on the way to Sunday’s final. In the last three cup games, Wilton have notched up 12 goals in three games which included a 6-1 victory over Lagan Harps, a 4-0 win against the highly rated Peamount United while it took penalties to decide the semi-final tie against the Wexford Women’s League after a 2-2 draw.

Wilton United captain, Sineád Forde is no stranger to the pressure of cup final games, having won the WFAI senior cup with UCD in 2004 at Lansdowne Road. Forde has been used both in central defence and midfield for Wilton this year and her international experience at U16 and U18 level will be a huge advantage for the Cork outfit.

Speaking ahead of the Umbro WFAI Cup final, Forde said, "This is a huge occasion for everybody involved in Wilton and for women’s football in Cork. Having the final at Turners Cross is definitely an advantage for us and we will hopefully get a good home crowd there on the day to support us. Having lost the 2009 final, St. Catherine’s will be hungry for this title and I think that they have to go into the game as favourites which definitely takes the pressure off us. We were lucky to advance past the semi-final stage after our 2-2 draw with Wexford as they hit the cross-bar in the final kick in the game before the penalty kicks went to sudden death. I think we will need a little bit more luck next Sunday if we are continue our good run in the cup this year."

While Wilton United may not be a name synonymous with the WFAI Senior Cup, Forde explained that the team have vital experience in national cup success, "While Wilton won the FAI Intermediate Cup in 2004, we have a new breed of young players who have won the U16 and U18 National Cups in the last number of years. These players have now come through the ranks and I believe their experience in winning national cup finals will have a huge bearing on the outcome on Sunday," she added.
