Wexford Youths win EVOKE.ie FAI Women's Cup

The EVOKE.ie FAI Women’s Cup Final saw a record-breaking attendance with 3,053 fans turning up at Tallaght Stadium today, where Wexford Youths beat Shelbourne 3-1 to lift the trophy.
21st Nov 2021

In what was the 47th staging of this Cup Final, the largest crowd for a women’s senior domestic football game in the Republic of Ireland turned up to witness a thrilling battle between two of the best teams in the country.

Early indications suggest that viewing figures for the game on RTÉ2 are also at an all-time high with more exposure brought to the Cup Final than ever before as EVOKE.ie celebrate their first year as primary sponsors of the competition.

Lynn Marie Grant put Wexford ahead with a lobbed effort over goalkeeper Amanda Budden early on but Shelbourne hit back before half-time through midfielder Ciara Grant. Wexford regained the lead via a deft flick from captain Kylie Murphy before Edel Kennedy fired in a superb goal from distance to seal the win.

Speaking about the day, Jonathan Hill, FAI CEO, said: “It was fantastic to see a record crowd attend the EVOKE.ie FAI Women’s Cup Final, which further showcases the rapidly expanding growth of the girls and women's game in Ireland. This is an area that is really important to the FAI and will be a major part of our Strategic Plan 2022-2025.

“We are thrilled with how our partnership with DMG Media has gone to date and we appreciate the efforts that Paul Henderson and his team at EVOKE.ie have gone to in order to raise the level of coverage for this competition. There is no doubt that without the engaging activity produced across their channels that we would not have achieved a record attendance today. We look forward to working with DMG Media going forward as we continue to elevate stands - on and off the pitch - in girls and women's football."

Speaking about the EVOKE.ie FAI Women’s Cup Final, Paul Henderson, CEO of DMG Media, said: “We are really proud to support women’s sport, particularly through our partnership with the FAI. Sport has never been more important in Irish society. The attendance recorded today is recognition of how enormously important women’s sport is and how and we are stronger with sport. We’re excited to watch the EVOKE.ie FAI Women’s Cup continue to grow over the coming years.”
